Pentathlon Canada Secures Core Funding from Sport Canada to Fuel National Growth

Ottawa, ON – [October 10, 2025] – Pentathlon Canada is proud to announce that it has been awarded multi-year core funding through the Sport Support Program, administered by Sport Canada, a branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This funding (2025-2029) will significantly bolster the organization’s day-to-day operations and support long-term strategic priorities in modern pentathlon.

“Modern pentathlon is one of the most demanding and exciting sports out there—it pushes athletes to be at their very best across five different disciplines. With this investment, our government is proud to support Pentathlon Canada as they grow the sport, support their athletes, and bring more Canadians into the action. This is about building opportunities, fueling dreams, and celebrating the incredible versatility of our athletes,” said The Honourable Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport).

“This core funding is instrumental for Pentathlon Canada,” added Rod Staveley, President of Pentathlon Canada. “It strengthens our capacity to deliver athlete development programs and competitions, elevate the sport’s profile nationwide, and ensure governance, equity, and safe-sport frameworks are robust and enduring.”

Sport Canada’s Sport Support Program provides core funding that sustains the fundamental operations of National Sport Organizations (NSOs), covering essential costs such as coaching, facility rentals, equipment, administrative support, translation, safe sport initiatives, and travel.

This funding enables multi-year planning and supports continuous excellence.

Pentathlon Canada plans to allocate the funding toward:

· Enhancing athlete development across all levels, from grassroots to Los Angeles 2028

· Promoting safe sport, diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies

· Investing in coach education, training facilities, and safe competition environments

“We are grateful for Sport Canada’s vision to invest in NSOs and ensure their sustainability,” added Shelley Callaghan Executive Director of Pentathlon Canada. “This support empowers us to live up to the national sport policy goals and build a stronger modern pentathlon community across Canada.”

The Sport Support Program aligns with the broader objectives of the Canadian Sport Policy—fostering participation, world-class performance, technical leadership, and sport values that reflect Canada domestically and abroad.

About Pentathlon Canada
Pentathlon Canada serves as the national governing body for modern pentathlon—an Olympic sport encompassing fencing, swimming, obstacle, and combined laser-run. The organization is committed to athlete excellence, safe sport, equitable access, and the growth and promotion of the sport across the country.

Modern pentathlon, a core Olympic sport, is the only sport created specifically for the Olympics. It was developed by the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, as the ultimate skill-and-strength test of a soldier. The sport debuted at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics and has featured in every subsequent edition of the Games.
