Dear Friend of Pentathlon,

With your generous financial support, the Canadian Modern Pentathlon Association (CAMPA) will have the resources to provide expert coaching, to offset travel expenses and to provide modest living allowances to existing and rising stars, and continue to do so in the years to come.

Our guarantee to you: 100% of the funds raised will go to supporting Canadian athletes as they prepare and compete at these events.

Denise Fekete Memorial Fund

Denise FeketeThe Denise Fekete Memorial Fund was set up in June 2002 following the untimely death of Denise on May 24 of that year, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Through the many generous donations received, the fund will be able to provide a cash award of up to10% of the value of the Fund up to $250 maximum each. It will be presented to the top Canadian male and female athlete, competing in either the Junior or Senior Divisions at the Annual National Championships each year. In an Olympic year, we will honour all Canadian pentathletes who qualify to compete in the Olympic Games.

Pentathlon was a passion for Denise. Her leadership and her meticulous head for detail are part of her legacy to the sport in Canada. Denise was actively involved in many aspects of the Canadian Modern Pentathlon Association for some 25 years. Most recently, Denise was elected to the position of the Member of the Board of Directors of the then Canadian Olympic Association (now the Canadian Olympic Committee), representing modern pentathlon. Denise was very well respected within the COC. She has also held a variety of positions on the Executive of CAMPA (now Pentathlon Canada) and was instrumental in setting up the original National Team Selection Policy of our Association.

John Norton Fund

John Norton was for many years the National Team Coordinator of CAMPA (now Pentathon Canada). He was a kind and gentle man, a great sportsman who loved biathlon, camping, hiking and modern pentathlon. He worked very hard to promote modern pentathlon across Canada and to establish links with South and Central America.

It is to him that we owe the fact that we have Spanish on the CAMPA letterhead. He was universally liked and trusted for his fairness and open-mindedness.

When John died of cancer in 1984, a man called John Land – the father of one of the Quebec athletes – wanted to establish a fund in John Norton’s memory. Although he was not an athlete, he decided to run the 1985 Montreal Marathon and ask people to sponsor him. He completed the marathon and raised $1,600.

This money was given to Mrs. Norton so that a fund could be established. With the money that was raised, Mrs. Norton bought 10 commemorative plaques. Each year, since 1986, at the Canadian National Championships, the athletes have voted in a secret ballot for the person they feel has shown exceptional sportsmanship and consideration for others. The athlete who is thus honoured in memory of John Norton receives one of the plaques and a cheque, now given by Pentathlon Canada.

Donations to the Fund, in memory of John Norton, continue to be gratefully accepted and should be sent to the attention of Angela Ives, President, Pentathlon Canada at president@pentathloncanada.ca.
