John Norton Fund
John Norton was for many years the National Team Coordinator of CAMPA (now Pentathon Canada). He was a kind and gentle man, a great sportsman who loved biathlon, camping, hiking and modern pentathlon. He worked very hard to promote modern pentathlon across Canada and to establish links with South and Central America.
It is to him that we owe the fact that we have Spanish on the CAMPA letterhead. He was universally liked and trusted for his fairness and open-mindedness.
When John died of cancer in 1984, a man called John Land – the father of one of the Quebec athletes – wanted to establish a fund in John Norton’s memory. Although he was not an athlete, he decided to run the 1985 Montreal Marathon and ask people to sponsor him. He completed the marathon and raised $1,600.
This money was given to Mrs. Norton so that a fund could be established. With the money that was raised, Mrs. Norton bought 10 commemorative plaques. Each year, since 1986, at the Canadian National Championships, the athletes have voted in a secret ballot for the person they feel has shown exceptional sportsmanship and consideration for others. The athlete who is thus honoured in memory of John Norton receives one of the plaques and a cheque, now given by Pentathlon Canada.
Donations to the Fund, in memory of John Norton, continue to be gratefully accepted and should be sent to the attention of Angela Ives, President, Pentathlon Canada at president@pentathloncanada.ca.
