Two Canadians Make the Finals at Pentathlon World Cup #4 in Budapest, Hungary

May 14, 2013

OTTAWA, ON (May 14, 2013) - 2012 Olympian Donna Vakalis (Toronto, ON) and her teammate Mathea Stevens (Rockland, ON) both qualified for, and had strong results in, the Finals at the Modern Pentathlon World Cup #4 in Budapest, Hungary this past weekend. Vakalis finished in 24th spot with Stevens, in her first international competition in a year due to an injury, finishing in 29th place. The results will build their confidence as they train toward the remainder of their competitive season, including the Canadian Fencing Championships next weekend in Gatineau, QC (May 18-20, 2013).

DONNA VAKALIS (24th place): "I had a really great experience here in Budapest. Mathea and I worked really hard in the qualification round - many of the top athletes were here so we were both very pleased to make the cut to the top 36. The Final was very competitive so finishing where I did is a huge confidence boost at this point in my training."

MATHEA STEVENS (29th place): "Being my first full pentathlon in a year, I’m really happy with my performance. A personal best time in the pool today shows that the time spent in the water during the recovery from my foot injury paid off. I’m excited to get back to work on the other disciplines to find points in those areas as well."

JOHN HAWES (National Team Head Coach): "It was great to again have two women in the finals of a World Cup. It's so important that our national team continues to compete and develop at the international level, even in year one of the quad looking toward the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In competing at this level and making the final in Budapest, Donna and Mathea see their progress against their competition and can identify their various strengths and weaknesses for further focus in training."

Results from World Cup #4 in Budapest, Hungary can be found on the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) Web site.
