Two Canadians On The Podium at the NORCECA Pentathlon Championships in the Dominican Republic

July 17, 2013

OTTAWA, ON (July 17, 2013) - 2012 Olympians Melanie McCann (Mount Carmel, ON) and Donna Vakalis (Toronto, ON) topped the podium at the NORCECA Pentathlon Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic this past weekend, placing first and second respectively. NORCECA includes athletes in North America, Central America and the Caribbean region.

The competition in the Dominican Republic was also an opportunity for other Canadians to compete at a high international level. Shauna Biddulph (Calgary, AB) finished in 17th spot and Kelly Fitzsimmons (Calgary, AB) was 27th.

MELANIE MCCANN (1st place): "This was my first event since March given a very specific training and competition schedule this year following London so my goal was to be as consistent as possible. I definitely accomplished that and to finish on the podium was extra special - a huge confidence boost leading into the upcoming World Championships."

DONNA VAKALIS (2nd place): "I've been working hard on improving my running and shooting technique - and in Santo Domingo, I used that training to move up 11 positions in the combined event. I am very excited to see much bigger gains moving forward."

JOHN HAWES (National Team Head Coach): "The progress that both Melanie and Donna have made in their training was fantastic to see. They’re building towards being very competitive in a talented field at the World Championships in Chinese Taipei in August. I’m also excited to see the development of our other Senior athletes. Shauna and Kelly will be able to build off this experience in their training and in future international competitions."
