Over the years in his capacity as head coach of three different clubs, athletes under his guidance have set over 55 Canadian and 120 provincial records.
Hawes has been involved in modern pentathlon and swimming as an athlete, instructor, coach, and administrator for over 45 years and brings a wide range of professional and educational skills to the system. He has twice represented Canada at the Olympic Games as an athlete: once in swimming in 1972 and in pentathlon in 1976. He is currently the owner and co-head coach of the ROCS Swim Club in Ottawa where he is also the head coach of the Ottawa Modern Pentathlon Club. Over the years in his capacity as head coach of three different clubs, athletes under his guidance have set over 55 Canadian and 120 provincial records. He was the coach of pentathlete Lynn Seguin (nee: Chornobrywy) when she won gold at the 1983 world championships. He has a bachelor of science and a diploma in education from McGill University.
